Edinburgh’s Princes Street is famous for its shopping, stretching along the edge of Princes Street Gardens with views up to the Castle. Alongside big name brands, the parallel George Street offers a slightly more refined mix of boutiques, bars and restaurants. A few minutes away the modern St James Quarter brings together fashion, beauty, dining and entertainment under one dramatic glass roof. It’s the perfect combination for a multi generational day out and after a morning browsing and bagging a few finds with my mum, sister and daughter, we were ready for something indulgent.
Afternoon tea at The Balmoral is one of Edinburgh’s most elegant treats. Served in the Palm Court – a softly lit lounge beneath a glass dome, with tall palm trees and the gentle notes of live harp music – it feels both timeless and special. The hotel itself is a city landmark, its clock tower visible from across Edinburgh, and stepping inside feels like a moment away from the bustle outside. Our table quickly filled with a tiered stand of finger sandwiches, warm scones with clotted cream and jam and delicate pastries that looked almost too pretty to eat. The tea menu was extensive, with helpful staff guiding us towards their favourites and everything was served at just the right pace so we could chat and savour without feeling rushed. It’s not the cheapest afternoon tea in the city, but for a memorable family occasion, it’s hard to beat.
Afterwards, we wandered through Princes Street Gardens, letting the last of the sunshine and the view of the Castle round off the day. It was a simple combination, shopping, tea and a stroll but the setting and the company made it one of those days that stays with you.
