Discover the Magic of the Edinburgh Fringe

Chocolate lovers will find The Chocolatarium a must visit in Edinburgh’s Old Town. Just a few steps from the Royal Mile this small but hands on attraction offers workshops where you can make your own bars, sample cocoa from around the world and learn about the chocolate making process from bean to bar. It’s a fun, interactive experience for all ages and by the end you’ll have your own handmade chocolate to take home if it lasts that long.

The Royal Mile itself is a destination worth exploring. Running from Edinburgh Castle down to the Palace of Holyrood house, it’s packed with historic closes, tartan filled shops and the sound of bagpipes drifting through the air. In August, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival transforms the city into one giant stage, with thousands of shows spread across theatres, churches, courtyards and even the street. Tickets can be booked through the official Fringe website or via their app, which lets you search by date, location and type of performance. We booked a family friendly magician through the app and it was one of the highlights of our day close up tricks and mind reading moments that had us both laughing and gasping in disbelief. Between shows, you can simply wander the Royal Mile and catch street performers in full swing, from jugglers and musicians to comedians testing their material on the passing crowds.

Just off the Royal Mile is Victoria Street in Edinburgh’s Old Town is one of the most photographed streets in the city, curving down towards the Grassmarket with its colourful row of shops. Often said to have inspired Diagon Alley from Harry Potter, it’s a favourite with teens who love browsing quirky stores like Museum Context (packed with Harry Potter treasures), picking up vintage finds at Walker Slater, or grabbing a smoothie at Hula Juice Bar. With its cobbles, bright buildings and fun vibe, it’s also one of the best spots for photos in the city. And just around the corner, Frankenstein’s is worth a visit for a fun themed drink.

We also took a browse in The National Museum of Scotland which is always a big hit with my teen, the tech, space and interactive exhibits keep him totally engaged. The National Museum of Scotland is free and packed with fascinating exhibits from ancient history to space tech making it perfect and budget friendly stop for families.

Step inside Frankenstein’s in Edinburgh, spooky vibes, glowing lights and a monster themed drink stop you won’t forget!

The fringe and chocolate making were a hit such a fun day out! Even my son said it was one of the best days out he’s had in Edinburgh.
